Are you tired of mountains of laundry and piles of dirty dishes? Have you already gotten rid of your excess/unused items and it still doesn’t feel manageable?
We all do the same things every day- we get dressed, make ourselves food, wash our clothes, etc. But when we do those things make a huge difference in whether or not we are stressed throughout the day, and in how clean our house stays.
After much trial and error, here’s the timing of daily tasks that helps me the most. I’ve noticed that if I do tasks this way, everything runs much more smoothly:
1. Run your dishwasher overnight and empty it right after breakfast.
Dishes won’t pile up quite as fast throughout the day if you start your morning with an empty dishwasher and fill it throughout the day.
2. Make your bed first thing in the morning.
This makes it easier to fold laundry on it, lay out things during the day on it, and it makes your bedroom look neater even if you don’t have time to pick up the whole room.
3. Load your washer before bed, then start it in the morning. Dry and put away the laundry throughout the day.
Or, start the washer when you get home from work and put laundry in the dryer in the evening. Loading the washer the night before means it is ready to go in the morning; just add detergent and you’ve already accomplished one thing before breakfast. I don’t put a load in the washer before bed because then the clothes are sitting wet overnight.
Some people wait until the weekend to “catch up” on laundry. But nobody really wants to face an overflowing laundry basket (or two or three) on Saturday morning. Do one load a day until the laundry pile is gone, then load your washer before bed on nights when you have a full load. It’s so much easier!
4. Plan to complete one task during your child’s nap time or your lunch break at work.
Doing one chore, making one phone call, or paying one bill is an attainable goal and helps whittle away at your to-do list. If you get more than one done, even better! But it’s ok to be realistic and just do one.
5. Water your plants/yard in the evenings.
Watering during the day when the sun is burning overhead means that the water will evaporate more quickly.
6. Pack your/your kids’ lunches at night right after dinner.
The kitchen is already messy from making dinner, so clean it up once, not twice! Having lunch ready to go in the fridge the next day is a huge time saver for when you’re running late in the mornings.
7. Do a “15 minute pick up” to reset your main living area before bed.
It might not be enough time to put everything away, but just putting toys back in the toy bin, pillows back on the couch, and stray items back where they belong can help things from getting too out of control.
8. Have a “home” for as many items as possible.
Things are much easier to put away when everyone knows exactly where they go- shoes on a shoe rack, keys on a key rack, etc. It’s the things that don’t have a home that tend to pile up. If you have items that don’t have a home, ask yourself- do I really need these?
9. Set out everything you/your kids need for the next day the night before.
Set out your clothes and shoes, make sure important items like keys and wallet are in your bag, restock your diaper bag with diapers and wipes, etc. For young kids, check that school papers that need to be signed are in backpacks. Set bags or backpacks by the door with shoes next to them.
10. Find a few moments to do something you enjoy.
This might be early in the morning or it may be after everyone else is asleep, but don’t forget to read a chapter of your current book, catch up with a friend, take a bath, or even just wash your face.
The unpredictable will always happen, and some days are much busier than others; you might not be able to do all of these routines every day. But even doing just a few will significantly help your day- to-day life feel more streamlined!
