“May I help you?”
Her voice sounded so familiar that I had to do a double take. I told her thanks, I was just browsing; we talked about where the clearance section was. I was curious though so I had to ask: “Where are you from originally?”
Then it made sense why the store associate sounded exactly like my step-mom. They were both from South Africa. It was neat to meet someone from my step-mom’s birthplace so far away from it.
She was one of those cooks who could pick random ingredients from the pantry and whip up an amazing meal. She never used recipes; the amount of spices or veggies to add were stored in her mind. While not a vegetarian, she made several vegetarian meals that were delicious- my favorites being her vegetable curry with made-from-scratch sauce and these stuffed portobello mushrooms.
She would make the stuffed mushrooms every time I came to visit for Christmas. I’m glad that one year I watched her make them and wrote down the recipe. They are a little sweet, a little savory, and so delicious!
